An excellent detective who is very well put together.
The three episodes of one and a half hours flew by.
The often cynical humor mixed with the detective work is very nice and does not dominate the series.

Karen Pirie is based on the crime novels by Scottish author Val McDermid. McDermid, known for the stories about Dr. Tony Hill (the basis for the Wire In The Blood series), wrote six books about Karen Pirie. The producers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard turned the debut novel into a three-part series. Not much can go wrong with these recommendations, right?
Inspector Karen Pirie - excellently played by Lauren Lyle - is the no-nonsense and hands-on type. That's good because a 25-year-old cold case has to be solved. Against the grain of managers, men and media, Pirie tries to piece together the puzzle. What is immediately striking is the original approach of the otherwise conventional story in a typical Scottish setting, the photogenic St Andrews.
Pirie is young and fresh, has humor, is not flawed, has no demons from the past and is not a bitch. Just a nice colleague. And that is exactly the strength of Karen Pirie. Combined with some good plot twists, Karen Pirie rises above the average. A little too good for me, but with five McDermid books to go, this could well become a series that settles in the sub-top of British serial cinema.

Entertaining, exciting British detective series about a female inspector (Lauren Lyle) who is promoted to the Historic Cases Unit and has to reopen the investigation into an unsolved murder of a young barmaid. Nice characters, a plot that is well put together (based on a book by the Scottish writer Val McDermid) and cool humor make this a pleasant series. With three episodes of one and a half hours, this first series is also exactly long enough.
