Beck plot

Inspector Martin Beck works for the police in Stockholm, Sweden. Together with the eccentric Gunvald Larsson, they work on many murder cases. The defective social structure of the city plays a major role in this. For example, they encounter cases related to the drug world, they have to work with the secret service and they encounter smugglers. But also their own private lives are often involved in their work, so the pressure is very high.

A great season despite Beck fading into the background a bit. What starts to bother us a bit towards the last two episodes is Alex Beijer's backpack. It's good that the private lives and histories are discussed, but this specific event is now being extended a little too long. I understand that recordings are already taking place for a new season so I'm curious if this drags on. All in all, it's still a strong series. I wonder how long Peter Haber will continue to do this. We will certainly see him again in the new season.

Social criticism may have faded more into the background (but fortunately it is still there), thriller drama Beck is rock solid. Although there is also quite a bit to criticize this season, Beck S8 has a smooth scenario with pleasant and appealing characters. Four current episodes on feature film length, excellent acting and beautiful continuous storylines about the private developments of all characters. In S8, the Crying Cop is the best episode, but the quality doesn't differ much.

Beck himself - played by Peter Haber, now almost 70 - sometimes seems a bit at the end of his rope, and has no more than a supporting role. Don't worry though, grandson Vilhelm (Valter Skarsgård, son of Stellan Skarsgård) attends the Police Academy and ensures continuity. Just like the British Cold Feet, Beck is a classic that can go on forever at a slow release pace.

Well, it doesn't get any better.

The detective idiom nowadays only works somewhat if a series manages to score in terms of atmosphere, a (rather) decently developed plot and convincing actors and I don't see that enough in Beck s8. It's a bit of us/them aka goodies vs. baddies with little nuance. As far as I'm concerned, Beck himself is ready for retirement and without him there is very little left. Even my neighbor is now done with it.

2.0*.
