Hele fijne serie, met formidabele acteurs, smaakt eigenlijk naar meer, maar dit schijnt een miniserie te zijn? Erg onder de radar gebleven, dus verwacht dat het daardoor wel bij dit ene avontuur zal blijven.

Very nice series, with formidable actors, actually tastes like more, but this seems to be a miniseries? Very under the radar, so expect that it will stay with this one adventure.

Hier en daar wat onevenwichtig; zo begint de serie erg overdreven en flauw en zakt de boel halverwege een beetje in, maar gaandeweg ontpopt dit zich toch wel tot een mooi uitgewerkte, prachtig gespeelde en fraai vormgegeven miniserie. Matthew Rhys is perfect gecast als Mason en hij ziet zich omringd door een eersteklas cast. Had hier en daar wel wat ingekort kunnen worden, zo wordt er veel te veel tijd besteed aan het hele gebeuren rond de kerk, maar de serie maakt voldoende indruk om de tekortkomingen door de vingers te zien. Typische HBO-kwaliteit- en dat is bedoeld als compliment.

A bit unbalanced here and there; the series starts off very exaggerated and bland and things collapse a bit halfway through, but gradually this develops into a nicely worked out, beautifully played and beautifully designed miniseries. Matthew Rhys is perfectly cast as Mason and he finds himself surrounded by a top-notch cast. Could have been shortened a bit here and there, way too much time is spent on the whole happening around the church, but the series is impressive enough to overlook the shortcomings. Typical HBO quality - and that's meant as a compliment.

Wat een serie. De eerste aflevering lijkt nog een wat standaard, duistere jaren-30 crime-serie maar het wordt steeds beter en intrigerender. Deed me erg denken aan Carnivale qua sfeer, setting, en zelfs de muziek (die lijkt zelfs een beetje gejat...). Heel veel boeiende thematiek, soms wat al te erg geprojecteerd vanuit hedendaagse thema's, maar tegelijk is dat precies wat ze moeten doen met zo'n remake. Rhys is bovendien perfect gecast als Mason, Maslany kan grandioos freestylen zoals we haar kennen van Orphan Black, en ja er zitten voor de rest veel jaren-30 karikaturen in maar dat is juist zo heerlijk. Overigens, kijk voor de grap eens naar de rollen die dezelfde karakters in de oude serie uit de jaren '50 en '60 nu krijgen, en je ziet direct het statement dat de remake van zichzelf al is. Ik hoop heel erg dat ze hiermee doorgaan (inclusief met Maslany), wat een potentie heeft dit!

What a series. The first episode still seems a bit standard, dark 1930s crime series but it gets better and more intriguing. Reminded me a lot of Carnivale in atmosphere, setting, and even the music (it even seems a bit stolen...). Lots of fascinating themes, sometimes too much projected from contemporary themes, but at the same time that's exactly what they have to do with such a remake. Rhys is also perfectly cast as Mason, Maslany can freestyle magnificently as we know her from Orphan Black, and yes there are many caricatures from the 1930s, but that's just so wonderful.

Incidentally, just jokingly take a look at the roles that the same characters in the old series from the 50s and 60s are now getting, and you immediately see the statement that the remake already is itself.

I really hope they continue with this (including with Maslany), what a potential this has!
