The Valhalla Murders plot

Arnar, an Oslo detective with a painful past, reluctantly travels from Copenhagen to Reykjavik to help investigate a case of Iceland's first serial killer. It concerns a brutal series of murders in which older men are brutally abused and slaughtered. Arriving in Iceland, Arnar is paired up with Senior Inspector Kata, who is not happy with his involvement. The murders don't seem to have much in common at first, but then the duo discover that the murders are related to an abandoned orphanage for boys, Valhalla. And in Valhalla 35 years ago terrible crimes took place...

Prima ijslandse krimi, goed gemaakt en gespeeld en met een spannend plot. Het is even inkomen, met name omdat de eerste aflevering gewoonweg niet zo boeiend is, maar daarna ontpopt de reeks zich snel tot een boeiend en meeslepend gebeuren, met sympathieke personages en een karrevracht aan intriges en verrassende wendingen. En het imposante landschap draagt uiteraard flink bij aan de sfeer.

Excellent Icelandic krimi, well made and played and with an exciting plot. It takes a while, especially because the first episode is simply not that exciting, but after that the series quickly turns into a fascinating and compelling event, with sympathetic characters and a cartload of intrigue and surprising twists. And of course the impressive landscape contributes considerably to the atmosphere.

Prima nordic noir uit IJsland. Slecht zijn Scandinavische thrillers (bijna) nooit, maar de kwaliteit heeft in de loop der jaren wel wat ingeboet. Het lijkt veel op elkaar. Als The Valhalla Murders de eerste in de rij was geweest (in plaats van bijvoorbeeld The Killing) dan was de waardering veel hoger geweest. Dat is niet zo. Maar genieten kunnen we wel degelijk. Van het goede acteerwerk, de verbluffende landschappen en het verrassende scenario en plot, met hier en daar een twist en turn. S2 mag komen, heb me uitstekend vermaakt.

Excellent Nordic Noir from Iceland. Scandinavian thrillers are (almost) never bad, but the quality has lost a bit over the years. It looks a lot alike. If The Valhalla Murders had been first in line (instead of, say, The Killing), the rating would have been much higher. That is not true. But we can really enjoy it. From the good acting, the stunning landscapes and the surprising scenario and plot, with an twist and turn here and there. S2 may come, I had a great time.

Het hoofdverhaal en het acteerwerk was erg goed. Maar helaas worden de details in dit soort series een beetje eentonig en afgezaagd. Politiemensen die soloacties uitvoeren en steeds weer klappen krijgen, daders die zelden in de cel belanden maar ofwel zelfmoord plegen of er tussenuit piepen. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens over de sores die al die rechercheurs in hun privéleven hebben. Ook zo'n beetje standaard is het slecht uitgewerkte slot. Ook in deze serie van begin tot einde dezelfde teneur. De bedenkers hiervan kijken teveel bij elkaar af. Ik zit nog steeds te wachten op een misdaadserie die gewoon 'to the point' is, zonder al die bijzaken en zonder de vele domme politieacties.

The main story and acting was very good. But unfortunately the details in this kind of series get a bit monotonous and trite. Policemen who perform solo actions and get beaten again and again, perpetrators who rarely end up in jail but either commit suicide or sneak out. And then I'm not even talking about the worries that all those detectives have in their private lives. Also pretty standard is the poorly worked out slot. Also in this series from start to finish the same tenor. The creators of this look too much alike. I'm still waiting for a crime series that is just 'to the point', without all those side issues and without the many stupid police actions.
