'Poolman tells the story of Darren Barrenman, a native Los Angeleno who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block and fighting to make his hometown a better place to live. When he is tasked by a femme fatale to uncover the truth behind a shady business deal, Darren enlists the help of his friends to take on a corrupt politician and a greedy land developer. His investigation reveals a hidden truth about his beloved city and himself.'
The plot is believed to be a comedic take on Chinatown.
Pine is making his directorial debut with the project which also stars Annette Bening, Danny DeVito, Jennifer Jason Leigh, DeWanda Wise, Ray Wise, Juliet Mills, Stephen Tobolowsky, Clancy Brown, Ariana DeBose.
Poolman premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and is scheduled for a theatrical release on 10 May, 2024.
Critics haven't been particularly kind to the movie so far. Siddhant Adlakha from IndieWire wrote of Poolman: "It’s only 100 minutes long, but upward of 99 of those minutes are likely to be spent in silent boredom, if not irritated disbelief at being subjected to such guileless, artless nonsense."
