Margot Robbie has cast doubt on a potential sequel to Barbie.
The first movie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Robbie in the title role, was an astonishing financial success and earned $1.44 billion at the worldwide box office. It received almost universal critical acclaim, too.
The box office success naturally led to speculation about a potential sequel, but Robbie isn't sure what it would look like.
"I think we put everything into this one. We didn't build it to be a trilogy or something," she told AP Entertainment.
"It was like Greta put everything into this movie, so I can't imagine what would be next."
Robbie remains immensely proud of Barbie, and believes it proved that original movies with a female lead can work.
"I'd say the biggest takeaway for me is that original films can still hit huge at the box office," the actress continued.
"It doesn't have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake. It can be totally original. It can still be big, given the big budget to do that. And just because there's a female lead doesn't mean it's not going to hit all four quadrants, which is, I think, a misconception that a lot of people still have.
"So it's really important that Barbie did well. As much as it is nice, it's also really important that it does well so people can also, in the future, have big original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly."
How much did Margot Robbie make from Barbie?
Robbie was one of the champions of the project from the get-go and got it off the ground via her production company. For starring and producing in Barbie, she earned a cool $50m, according to Variety.
