The Vanquished plot

Rockwell "Rock" Grayson, a former Confederate prisoner of war, returns to the south after the Civil War ends. He determines that the despotic Roger Hale of the Northerners is in charge of his region. Hale, an old enemy of Rock, has set up his command post at the Graysons' mansion. Hale also appears to be very interested in Roy's friend Jane Colfax and he is possessive of her. Rock is asked by the locals to rebel with them against Hale. However, much to the surprise of the villagers, Rock has applied to Hale as a taxpayer's cashier. But Rock has a plan of his own: he wants to legally try to get Hale out by collecting incriminating evidence against him.
