Quits plot
John Sloan is the sheriff of Long Butte. One day, while wandering through the countryside, he sees some bushes moving. Thinking it is an animal, he shoots and misses. Later, he takes another shot and is more successful, knocking off the hat of a man who is hiding. The man comes forward and tells the sheriff that his name is "Frenchy." The sheriff leaves him and starts to cross the nearby creek where he sinks up to his armpits in quicksand. He is rescued by Frenchy, who tells the sheriff that he is a fugitive from justice and begs his protection. The sheriff realizes his debt to the criminal and takes him home, where he gives him the best house in the house and tells him that he will shelter him for the night and help him in the morning.
