Louisiana, 1803. The Spaniards, who control Louisiana, want to prevent Luke E. Gilmore's American ships from sailing up the Mississippi. Gilmore, owner of the Louisiana Fur Co., wants to smuggle guns into St. Louis so his supporters can elect him as governor of Louisiana. Young American John Colfax is sent to Louisiana by President Thomas Jefferson to negotiate with the Spanish. John is accompanied on his mission by his attractive Mexican girlfriend and interpreter Angela Gonzales. When John discovers Gilmore's weapons, he is arrested by him.
