When 13-year-old Texan Joey Slade witnesses the murder of his father, he decides from that moment on to hunt as a gunfighter and take revenge on all the outlaws. Joey takes the name from his father: Joseph A. 'Jack' Slade. Some years later, Jack becomes district manager of Dan Traver's Overland Stage Line and marries Virginia Dale. Virginia and Traver worry about Jack. Jack has been hunting the Prentice Boys, who have robbed a stagecoach. Jack unwittingly killed the innocent Old Tom, the cook of the outlaws, in the chase. Since then he has been drinking, being aggressive and neglecting Virginia. Traver feels compelled to fire Jack. One day, Jack is trapped in a saloon by the Prentice Boys.
