Attila plot

Two worlds collide. And the two men who stand for the values and essence of these civilizations... Attila, King of the Huns, is an idealist and sees more in his people than they see in themselves. While the Huns happily pillage and exploit their neighboring countries, Attila sees in his mind's eye the possibility of an empire and a new world order. The Roman general Flavius Aetius is the personification of the best and the worst that Rome has to offer in the last years of its existence. He is motivated by one big goal: Rome must remain world leader.

It's a shame that apparently there wasn't enough budget to really make a spectacle of this. Now it was a cheap mix of the Rome series on the one hand and Braveheart on the other. The script wasn't bad at all. Intrigues, lust for power, romances, battles. Butler acts to the best of his ability. Boothe is also the ideal badguy to play the general. Incidentally, I was not really able to choose a side between the Huns and the Romans.

The Romans who see their built empire slowly pulverized and the Huns who slaughter defenseless peasants like beasts. The film looks reasonably away, but nowhere does it get that epic touch. There was also some prudishness with the female nude. There simply wasn't!

The music was nothing special. No, this really could have been something for me, because these kinds of history stories usually suit me. Now it hangs on average.

While every bit of film connoisseur is still baffled by Gladiator, Atilla seems completely overlooked. Okay the battles are perhaps less impressive and a number of sets don't seem completely believable either. Yet; there is still so much left that makes Atilla enjoy for more than 3 hours. The actors are formidable (Gerard Butler especially portrays Atilla very believable and even serious), the story is captivating, the dialogues are very strong, the filming locations are generally very beautiful (especially when Atilla is received in Rome). And historically, Atilla is a lot more correct than Gladiator. A very nice six-part TV series by Atilla has also recently appeared. And as far as I'm concerned, worth repeating, since little seems to be known about this beautiful film. Hopefully one day a film will be made about this beautiful history of the Huns in their fight against the Romans

Solid.

Fairly heavy at times, not in terms of content but because it threatens to get to the boring side every now and then. The relationship between Attila and Flavius keeps the film afloat in difficult moments.

This is of course also thanks to the acting of Gerard Butler and especially Powers Boothe, whose character head has much more to tell than that of Butler.

The only thing lacking here is budget. It creates a somewhat stage-like vibe. This is especially the case with the fights. With a higher production value, it would all have been visually appealing as well. Now it is a bit poor in that area and that is quite a pity.
