Laura Vallance, newly widowed, looks for a butler and thinks she's found the ideal candidate. The cunning Roger Masters is the epitome of efficiency, but also a ruthless trickster, who kills rich, lonely women and steals their fortunes. Masters manages to replace the housekeeper with an accomplice and gives Laura small doses of poison, making her sicker and even bedridden.
