A deadly boring flop by director Nicolas Winding Refn, who has clearly lost his way a bit since his breakthrough with Drive (2011). As far as I’m concerned, this is his worst film to date, featuring a hopeless plot, insignificant characters, and kitschy neon design that hurts the eyes. The "private hell" in the title therefore applies more to the viewer than to the content of the film.

A massive blunder by director Nicolas Winding Refn, who seems to have convincingly succumbed to his own arrogance with Her Private Hell. A totally illogical, messy product employing many different influences that never come together, featuring endless dialogue as well as monologues that lead nowhere. Refn’s forced attempts to portray all the characters as eccentrically as possible backfire disastrously, with many notable names simply unable to stand up to the deluge of nonsensical, theatrical directions assigned to them. As one might expect from Refn, the setting looks visually colorful and well thought-out, yet the lighting and sound fall short. Action scenes are lit so dimly that they are impossible to follow, and the frantic intentions to make this world as unique as possible feel forced. Sophie Thatcher does her best to salvage the situation, but has to make do with hopeless material. Kristine Froseth delivers even her worst acting performance to date and would be better off completely avoiding Refn's future projects.
