Prince Peter Karagin (Nelson Eddy), an officer in the Cossack army at the time, sees and hears the lovely Lydia Marakova (Ilona Massey) singing in the Balalaika cafe in Saint Petersburg and wants to meet her. When he learns that she likes to associate with the lower class, he gives a student 50 rubles for his clothes so that he can approach Lydia. What the prince doesn't know is that Lydia and her father and brother are members of a revolutionary movement...
