Journalist Addison Francis Murphy is on a train that takes a ferry to New Orleans. On the way he sees two men shaking hands on the ship and then he hears a loud splash. The two men have disappeared. When the train reaches its destination, Raoul Fontaine's luggage is left behind. Murphy assumes that this must belong to one of the two missing men and takes the luggage to his hotel.
