Silent Scream plot

"Terror so sudden there is no time to scream."

Student Scotty Parker enrolls rather late for college and therefore no longer gets a place in a dormitory. Finally, somewhere on the coast, she finds shelter in a large old mansion, inhabited by a young man, Mason Engels, his reclusive mother and three other fellow students. After a while, one of them is killed. A police officer and Scotty investigate and discover that the Engels family is hiding a dark secret.

An independent slasher from the early days of the American slasher wave. Clearly inspired by primal slasher Psycho: gothic country house on a hill, crazy mother figure in the attic, contact-disturbed son rents rooms, … up to and including the use of the Herrmann violins in the murder sequences.
It has enough charm in itself to entertain me. It contains some creepy horror moments and some really campy moments as well. The latter has mainly to do with the denouement of the family situation of the owners of the house. Camp is also using sensual saxophone arrangements in the more romantic scenes, which is at odds with the atmosphere that they want to build in the rest of the film. A plus is certainly the presence of cult actress Barbara Steele who can let herself go. All this makes it worth seeing once.
