Shame. There is a strong film hidden in here somewhere, but it doesn't quite come out. It is mainly the laziness with which it has been put together as a whole that kills the film. A lot of typical boring police/detective nonsense, characters that are portrayed far too cliché and then the 'poughkeepsie tapes' themselves, which are of course filmed in the poorest possible quality in the hope of making it all a bit grimier. Unfortunately, it is mainly counterproductive.

The actual content of the tapes was not nearly as shocking as the characters in the film constantly preach, a lot of lame SM incidents and some torture porn that mainly takes place off-screen. Yet there are some scenes that do make an impression. The interview with Cherylat the end is chilling and makes more of an impression than all the home video footage combined. That scene in itself makes up for a lot.

Ultimately, a film that is sufficiently interesting and has an edge thanks to an interesting concept, but apart from a few highlights it still feels like a somewhat missed opportunity. 2.5*.

Very interesting mockumentary. The film tries to appear realistic and, with the exception of some moments, it succeeds quite well. The scary thing is that there actually are serial killers out there who are so vile, merciless and cunning. The famous serial killers we know were stupid enough to get caught; I don't even want to know how many people like that have gotten away with their actions (to date).

The Poughkeepsie Tapes depicts the hunt for perhaps the scariest kind of people in the world: an intelligent and sadistic serial killer. I wasn't bothered by the poor quality of the videos, mainly due to the heavy content of these videos. Obviously the torture and murders, but also sneaking into Cheryl's house, while she and her boyfriend are also walking around in the same house. Brrrr. It clearly shows how dangerous our world can actually be: there are people who, just like in the film, are kidnapped and/or murdered in their own house or front yard by random passers-by.

The only drawback for me is the acting of the people involved, which at times is just not okay. Their functions are also sometimes laughable. A dismemberment expert, come on. It made me realize at those moments that it wasn't all real, and I thought that was a shame.

Other than that, I really enjoy this mockumentary. The atmosphere is very lugubrious and the murderer is terrifying. Not only because of his intelligence and physical torture, but also because of his ruthless psychological misdeeds, with which he completely destroys especially Cheryl. Truly monstrous. And I fear that there are also such monsters walking around on this planet without ever being caught.

What a dragon, simply bad fake true crime. If you want to see really good true crime, just look at the channel ID, a lot better than this nonsense! I'm a fan of true crime about serial killers, but good films are rarely made about them and this is really very bad....

I see that ID is also mentioned above, but it was clear that I was not watching that channel... even they don't act that bad...
