The Portrait plot
After her husband's devastating accident, devoted Sofia becomes captivated by a mysterious portrait that resembles him in his happy days. But as her obsession grows, the painting begins to cast terror over her life, leaving her wondering if it is possessed by an evil force or if she is going mad. Conceptually, The Portrait is quite nicely done and has enough depth to distinguish itself from similar genre films, but director Simon Ross has to bring it all at such an improbably and unreasonably slow pace that boredom quickly sets in. When no form of tension and/or atmosphere is built up anywhere, the viewer is still forced to feel that it was all a missed opportunity. The acting is not bad and the ideas are appropriately creative to a certain extent, but nothing happens. Towards the end, the pace is traditionally increased, but by then the film had already lost me. Incidentally, Virginia Madsen had no business here; she was probably added at the last minute to gain some name recognition.
