The Cursed plot
In the nineteenth century, the landowner Seamus Laurent murders a group of gypsies and with this act casts a curse on his family and village. In the following days, nightmares plague the villagers, Seamus' son Edward goes missing and the murdered body of a boy is found. This is believed to be the work of a wild animal, until pathologist John McBride takes charge of the case.

Director Sean Ellis never disappoints and this thoroughbred horror film, although not exactly original, is also worthwhile. It is especially visually enjoyable, with beautiful camera work and atmospheric production design. The gory make-up effects are also very convincing. Compared to that, the plot is a bit dull and the characters are little more than caricatures, but it's okay. The relentlessly nasty atmosphere lifts the whole thing just above ground level.

Style and atmosphere in this horror film about a landowner who curses himself and his family when he brutally exterminates a gypsy camp. That last one is also the best scene in the whole movie. Filmed from a distance, this is a highly orchestrated scene in which you see many different actions. After that, The Cursed becomes a dark horror movie in which the inhabitants of the estate have visions, disappear or are torn apart. The pathologist also refers to the beast of Gevaudan in which his wife and daughter were killed but chronologically this is not correct because these events took place 100 years before the events of the film. Not everything is equally strong and the film has quite a few goofs, but the cinematography is really beautiful and gives a solid impression.

Mediocre film about a village that is cursed by a group of gypsies. A fairly standard story that has all passed by before. It doesn't help that it sometimes gets repetitive and quickly becomes tedious. The whole is attractively portrayed with a few nice shots.
