Laura Van Ee is dead, but the cause cannot be determined immediately. On the autopsy table, she herself tells what happened. She was married to a doctor's son, but love had long since disappeared. When hypnotist Professor Leonide (Lugosi), the doctor's nephew, paid an unexpected visit, a plan hatched to get her out of the way by exploiting her mysterious past.
