Marama plot

The story unfolds on the grim moors of North Yorkshire in 1859, where the British Empire casts long and distorted shadows. Mary Stevens, a young Māori teacher from Aotearoa (New Zealand), arrives seeking the truth about her family, only to discover that the man who summoned her is already dead and there is no clear path home. Stranded in an unfamiliar and inhospitable land, Mary takes a job at Hawkser Manor under the seemingly benevolent Sir Nathaniel Cole, a wealthy landowner who made his fortune as a whaling ship in the South Pacific.

An authentic, visually appealing horror film with good acting. In principle, all the elements that make a horror film complete are present in Marama, except that the content itself doesn't really stick. Director Toa Stappard certainly seems to have thought through where the direction of this film should lie, but subsequently fails to portray it in a very engaging way. Moreover, the outdoor locations look soulless and random, leaving the viewer mostly waiting to see when the characters will be back inside the large house. Ultimately, I couldn't really care less about the progress of Ariaana Osborne and her tragedy, with a slowly developed and unintriguing mystery taking center stage. Additionally, the resolution is disappointing.
