Visually a picture (reminiscent of Black Sabbath), but in terms of content perhaps too heavy for the modern horror fanatic and therefore only recommended for Bava fans or genre completers.
Personally, I found it a bit of a let down. The plot pays excessive attention to romance - the mutual romances looked a lot like an episode of Mooi&Medogenloos - and there is very little horror. But the typical Bava atmosphere with its beautiful gothic decors and majestic use of color is once again present for the full 100 percent, so that it remains bearable in the end.

Worked extra on Thursday to be able to watch "Trash Kino" again in the evening on ARTE - don't say I'm not willing to pay for it.
Film tends to the Hammer Horror (and Christopher Lee also helps a lot) but with slightly more sexual/sado-masochistic undertones.
The Mario Bava influence will therefore mainly be in him (although the name John M. Old came as a director on the title role - a predecessor of Allan Smithee).
Some very nice visual highlights raise the film just a bit above the average Hammer level, especially the hand that comes straight at the camera is a classic.
