A group of YouTubers want to find out if the rumors of paranormal activity in Beelitz, near Berlin, are true, and head out to the site of a former hospital, equipped with night vision goggles and thermal cameras. But the original pleasure soon turns into bitter seriousness, when they realize that things really aren't right there. Now it's too late to change your mind.

A bunch of annoying YouTubers in a classic horror scenario results in a very mediocre found footage film. The dark atmosphere of the pleasant haunted location is squandered by the flashy ego trips of the camera-hungry characters. The film only very sporadically succeeds in impressing in content and visuals.
Lots of lame jokes, bad twists and little horror. The few acceptable horror scenes disappear ingloriously in a sea of noise, hectic and overwrought screaming. The right atmosphere is never right.
I was very glad when the movie was over at some point.

German director Michael David Pate packs a bunch of annoying, noisy actors into a spooky location. Characters who don't respect these kinds of environments naturally bring bad things upon themselves, and Heilstätten is no exception. The first half hour is a typical introduction in which the loose story is talked together, before Pate switches to almost non-stop spooking. A plot twist towards the finale is unexpected, the location is atmospheric and in between a number of effective jump scares set the tone, but otherwise it is all pretty sparse and not very well acted. There are simply too few highlights to be found for this running time, which often makes the film tend to sag.
