Weak werewolf movie where the dog is the hero of the house. There are enough werewolf movies; only a few of them can be called good. This one is also a reasonable stinker in the genre. A good attempt is made to make something of it, certainly by showing the transformation with CGI . But the scene is far below the level of "An American Werewolf in London". It is not threatening and intense enough. As Boeikens also says above: nowhere innovative and yet entertaining. That sums it up well.

I thought it was pretty good. The acting and the script aren't all that great. The werewolf does look good, but it's a bit of a shame about the transformation scene. Furthermore, I found the gore here and there surprisingly bloody for a 90's flick.
The addition of the intelligent dog makes it almost a family film, but personally I didn't find that too disturbing.
Entertaining B-movie.

The most important role in this film is probably reserved for the shepherd dog Thor. Thor is the third member of the family consisting of (an underperforming) Mariel Hemmingway and her son. The family is expanded with the arrival of brother Michael Paré, who had an unpleasant experience in the prologue of the film.

The story is not very surprising. The mystery of the werewolf is solved quickly. The worries and interactions between the family members that take up a large place in the story after the solution of the mystery of the werewolf, are not very interesting. The film takes on the allure of a TV movie.

Bad Moon is the adaptation of the book Thor. The book focuses strongly on the relationship between the dog Thor and newcomer Paré, who threatens the dog's place in the pack. The mutual competition that is exciting is certainly expressed in the film, but it is not very intense. For example, it would have been more exciting to follow the conflict more emphatically from Thor's point of view.

The perspective is also alternately placed with the other characters. They are afflicted with average (family) problems that are not very interesting, which causes the tension to fluctuate quite a bit. That is disappointing. The scenes that take place from Thor's perspective simply have the most oppressive power.

The werewolf is convincing although there are many films where a werewolf looks more convincing. Just as there are many films where a werewolf looks a few degrees worse. No complaints there.

The staging lacks atmosphere. The many shots of the full moon, which strangely enough remains in full bloom for the duration of the film, eventually have little power of expression.

Bad Moon is doable, but definitely not a highlight in the genre.
