Totem plot
Eleven-year-old Ama from Rotterdam has an exciting and magical adventure when she tries to escape the police who want to bring her and her family back to Senegal, the country they come from. On her ramble, she is joined by a giant porcupine she calls Totem, who becomes her protector and guide. With the help of a spiritual storyteller (griot), the mysterious Kouyaté, Ama learns more about her Senegalese roots and the value of her totem animal.

11-year-old Ama [Jean-Philippe Amani] was born when her father [Emmanuel Ohene Boafo] and mother [Céline Camara] were on their way from Senegal to the Netherlands. Ama's mother and brother are arrested when the police discover during a routine visit that they are in the Netherlands illegally. Father is at work and Ama was almost home and managed to hide in the playground. She finds shelter in the loft of friend (and swimming buddy) Thijs [Ole van Hoogdalem], not knowing that his mother [Lies Visschedijk] is the agent responsible for the manhunt for Ama and her father. During the search for her father, Ama is joined by a Totem (a spiritual animal) in the shape of a porcupine. A tough subject that is written in a way that is digestible for the young target group and it is nice that Burger did not opt for CGI to bring the porcupine to life. But the pace is slow, Sal Kroonenberg appears barely able to hold a camera upright and Amani is unconvincing in the more emotional scenes.
