The story is set in the future where a government that controls the entire world controls everything. A remarkable inventor, Ward, creates a drug that allows people to literally live their wildest dreams. Over the next 20 years, 50% of the world's population uses this drug, while the Union of United Esquires, made up of lawyers with guns who act as the world's police force by executing and enforcing contracts, takes care of them. But now the drug is gone, and everyone who used it is under house arrest.
