It's 1933 and in Copenhagen, teenager Maren [Emilie Kroyer Koppel] immerses herself in jazz, booze and sex to such an extent that child protection authorities take control of her. Because she refuses to answer childishly simple questions to determine whether she is mentally retarded, Dr. Wildenskov [Anders Heinrichsen] concludes that she is 'mildly mentally retarded and deranged' and that she is therefore better off in a women's home on the island of Sprogø , where Ms. Nielsen [Lene Maria Christensen] holds sway. Based on the experiences of women who lived there from the 1930s to 1961. Quickly evokes comparisons with One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and that battle cannot be won. Christensen does a creditable imitation of Nurse Ratchit, but the slow pace and chronic lack of humor or enlightenment kill it off despite good acting.

Of course you have the very dramatic Der Kommer en Dag (Film, 2016), but I have the feeling that the theme - specifically around sterilization in the mentally retarded in Denmark - having seen it before in another Danish film. The subject was certainly not unknown to me and the source cannot be found anywhere other than on a cinematic level, bon.

Child protection was a current issue in many European countries at the beginning of the 20th century. In the interests of the child, but often with a very narrow view, social dramas were created based on the idea that children or parents should be guided, directed or even punished by the government. It was a Darwinian approach to 'help'.

Although there were some psychological wounds and the practices were somewhat wrong, I had the impression that the doom and gloom of "Der kommer en dag" was not approached in this film. Good thing, too. Lene Maria Christensen gives a strong performance as the "mother superior" on the island of Sprogo. I had the feeling - despite the concealment of the truth - that there was a certain caring in the institution. Of course, some things were unacceptable, but care and stability were offered based on their own frame of reference. This is also witnessed by swimming after Maren when she dived into the sea. This is from the perspective of really helping or saving her.
