Umrao Jaan plot

In 1840, as a young girl, Amiran is kidnapped from her family by their neighbor Dilawar Khan. She is sold to Madam Khanum Jaan, who runs a brothel in which she trains courtesans. Amiran is given the name Umrao Jaan and learns to read, write, sing and dance. She therefore does not appear to be an ordinary prostitute, but a cultivated lady, who can win over many rich and important men with her charm.
