Driven pilot Russ Evans has to leave the army due to health problems and he returns to his childhood home. Russ befriends Elaine Graham, the widow of an army mate. Elaine, who can make ends meet by singing in the nightclub of the criminal Smacksie Golden, has inherited a sizable lumber business. Her financial future stands or falls with a huge load of wood, which must arrive on time. Russ thinks he can help Elaine with his private plane, but he also has to face Elaine's cynical and know-it-all friend Lil Boggs, Smacksie Golden's fiancé.
