Russia, 1914. Marya Ivanova Sablin is the wife of the sensitive scientist Victor Sabin. During World War I, Victor is drafted into the Russian army and given the rank of lieutenant. Unable to cope with the rigidity and discipline of military life, Sabin is sentenced to death for insubordination. To save her husband's life, Marya seduces the lusty General Platoff. The encounters with Platoff take place in a brothel. Unintentionally by both, Marya and Platoff fall in love and the jealous Sabin threatens to kill his rival.
