The Surface plot
"Sometimes you look for the end. Sometimes it looks for you."
Mitch starts his day with a visit to his demented mother in a nursing home, before sailing his late father's 1970s boat to the middle of Lake Michigan. As he prepares for a gentle ride, he crashes into the wreckage of a small plane, stranding him in the middle of the lake. As his small boat drifts, he discovers Kelly, the plane's pilot, clinging to a wreckage. He pulls the badly injured man out of the water, but instead of being grateful Kelly is angry and suspicious. With no cell phone coverage and a boat making water, the men begin to reveal the reason they're on the lake that day.
