The Stork Derby plot
"The story of a bizarre bequest of a wealthy late Canadian lawyer"
When Charles Millar, a wealthy bachelor lawyer, died in Toronto in 1926, it was discovered that he had left millions of dollars to the woman in Toronto who would give birth to the most babies during the ten years after his death! This 'news' made headlines all over the world and sparked one of the first media frenzy, also known as 'The Great Toronto Stork Derby'. The Toronto Daily Star sponsored coverage of this race that lasted just over ten years, resulting in a sensational lawsuit. What was seen by many as a sick joke, however, turned out to have a tragic outcome for many others, especially the poor who, in this proposal, smelled a chance to finally be liberated from the harsh and grueling reality of the 1930s.
