The Pit plot
Markuss has to adjust to a new life with his grandmother in the countryside. After Emīlija - a neighbor's daughter - makes some nasty comments about Markuss's father, he decides to teach her a cruel lesson. This has serious consequences that reverberate throughout the village. Forced to work, the boy begins to hate everyone. The only person he still gets along with is an old sailor.
