The Mountain Eagle plot
Pettigrew falls in love with his son's teacher, Beatrice. She, on the other hand, wants nothing to do with him. In blind rage, he accuses her of assaulting his son, Edward. To appease the village's moods, she marries the hermit, Fear O'God Fulton. Not long after, Beatrice gives birth to their first child. Pettigrew, in turn, hides Edward and accuses the hermit of murder. Fear O'God is arrested, but escapes and takes refuge in the mountains with his wife and son.
