The Descendant plot

Montréal, Canada. James finds some details of his past in an old shoebox, left to him by his mother, full of old photos and birthday cards from his grandparents who hadn't had any contact with him since he was three years old. His partner, Kim, advises him to go there, visit them, and reconnect with his past in order to find possible answers to why his mother expelled herself from her family. When James reaches the small isolated community of Saint-Harmonie, Quebec, he is warmly welcomed by an old friend of his mother's, but is viewed with suspicion by the others at the local bar. James meets his grandparents on their farm and plans to stay there for a few days. He sets out to unravel his mother's past and finds dark secrets hidden deep in their history by the village community.
