The Border plot

"He is as divided as the land itself."

Charlie (Jack Nicholson) is an agent with the US Border Patrol in Los Angeles. Pressured by his consumption-ill wife Marcy (Valerie Perrine), he moves to El Paso to live next door to Savannah, a former classmate. Savannah's husband Cat (Harvey Keitel) is border guard and shows Charlie around his new job site. His new duties will be to stem the daily influx of Mexican refugees at the border, round up illegal immigrants and send them back to Mexico. When it comes to light that Cat is not on the right track and is taking a share of the profits from a specific human trafficker, Charlie's conscience begins to gnaw.

The film starts promisingly, but towards the end the story is so full of holes and coincidences that my appreciation gradually started to decline. Nevertheless, hats off to Jack Nicholson, who convincingly shuttles back and forth between the raw reality of his work and his wife who is eager to please and spend money. The best part of the film is probably Ry Cooder's soundtrack. All in all a bit of a disappointment.

Excellent film in which a border guard faces many problems during his work. The film gives a fairly raw and realistic view of the problems surrounding the border with Mexico and the United States (partly thanks to the good location work). Several small plot threads without it becoming unbalanced. Entertaining from start to finish and Jack Nicholson never disappoints.

Good atmospheric noir-like film. The context of border and immigration conflicts is undoubtedly more topical than ever, although that is not a merit in itself. The portrayal of cop on the border between good and gray is good, played by Jack Nicholson. His mustache makes it complete. The themes are clear enough. Poor Mexicans want to cross the border - American middle class on the other side lives in a bubble. Between those two zones there is a dark zone where things happen that avoid daylight. I was not really aware of the existence of this film and it seems to me that it is unfairly forgotten. In addition to Nicholson, we also see Harvey Keitel at work here, another big name who is doing well. The film has a relatively happy ending which I did not immediately expect with this kind of theme, but in Hollywood at the time that was apparently still possible or necessary.
