Taebek Sanmaek plot
Korea, October 1948. Three years after the Japanese occupation, the political right and the left are fighting each other. Bul-kyo, a small town on the southwest coast, is taken by leftist commander Sangjin and his men, until government forces recapture the town and force them to retreat into the hills. Among the returning police forces and the followers of the right is Sangjin's brother, Sangku, who leads the anti-communist youth movement and has a deep hatred for his rebellious relatives. Bumwoo, the intellectual son of a landowner and friends with both brothers, sided with the Nationalists but criticized both sides, eventually falling victim to the anti-Communist terror. When the Korean War breaks out, Sangjin and his gang recapture Bul-Kyo with the help of troops from North Korea. Bumwoo is suspected of being a spy for the Americans.
