Swell Guy plot
Jim Duncan, a low-moral war correspondent, has returned to his hometown after World War II has ended. Jim tries to abuse his wartime by pretending to be a war hero. Jim successfully takes advantage of generous donors, such as his brother Martin. Jim even tries to make up with Martin's wife Ann. Jim continues to cheat the townspeople by continuing to be the war hero. During a charity drive for war veterans in his town, Jim steals the money raised and tries to get out of town before his misdeeds and misconduct are revealed.
