Tom is a working-class senior in high school hoping to win a scholarship to college. He and his friend Bill are obsessed with looking at women and blame their lack of success in seducing them on the fact that they don't have a car. Tom studies with the rather ordinary Cathy, but there is an informal camaraderie between them. Tom starts dating the busty Elaine, but never gets very far with her because she is saving herself for marriage. Eventually, Elaine convinces Tom to propose. But Cathy and Tom's playfulness goes too far and she ends up pregnant.
