Sati plot

Near the holy Ganges River in 1828, an ancient tree provides shelter and comfort to Uma, a deaf-mute Brahmin orphan. She is treated like a maid by her mean aunt. According to their religion, it is a sin if a girl is not married after puberty and a younger family member is not allowed if the older sister is not yet married. Unfortunately, there is no suitable partner for Uma, but a solution is found: Uma has to marry the tree. When she becomes pregnant after the marriage, she is accused of adultery by the villagers.
