Philip Ransome, a 10-year-old boy from Northern England, has been mute since he was three. He spends his days in silence and his parents do not know a solution to his problem. One day, he befriends a blue-eyed albino pony. He also makes friends with a retired colonel who accepts him for who he is, a girl his own age and a tame falcon. Philip seems to be slowly coming out of his shell.
