Shortly after the Second World War, the Riecan family moves to southern Slovakia to take over a prosperous butcher's business from a Hungarian emigrant. The family also takes over the services of greedy, self-assured assistant Valent Lancaric. This one helps the family get richer, but intrigues and creates discord within the family.
