In this family chronicle, Mrs. Parkington in flashbacks her life story. She is a hotel maid on the Nevada border where she is taken by oil tycoon August Parkington. They go to New York, August Parkington tries to turn her into a 'society woman' and they settle with the people from the highest echelons of society in New York. It becomes clear that family life and social life is not always peaceful.
