Maîtresse plot

"She will open your eyes."

A penniless provincial sells art books door to door and also explores the possibilities of burglary. He is confronted with the double life of an attractive apartment dweller who is the mistress of masochistic clientele one floor below. Curiosity and a certain fascination make him participate in her 'mises-en-scene' and he learns to accept the strict separation of both lives from the woman he is going to love, but it turns out she still has a (secret) life.

The intention is clear: when sturdy alpha male Depardieu discovers that frail Ogier is firmly in control in her underground world, he then notices that she is not necessarily the underlying party in their own relationship either, which prompts him to delve into her secrets... A not uninteresting premise is inevitably overshadowed by the sensational working environment, but Schroeder keeps it all reasonably cool (many medium shots) and at least doesn't make a freak show out of it ( as far as possible). Undoubtedly shocking at the time, now still quite uncomfortable at times because often very realistic and (literally) painfully explicit. And that after all these years I am only the second person to write something for a film with a fairly well-known director and such a famous protagonist (with no more than 11 votes!) Is quite remarkable : [i]mainstream[/i ] this movie is clearly not yet.

First of all, getting used to the young Depardieu from the time when he did not yet look like Obelix. 1970s love drama in which Depardieu falls for Bulle Ogier who earns her living as a mistress in the BDSM circuit.

Quite a few BDSM scenes, I'm not that much into it, one explicit scene is with needles and nails that evokes some yayks, for the rest erotic fantasies that are a bit lived out. You will find some more solid material on the web, but on the other hand for a public film with a well-known actress it is something about the soft porn mode. Might have been even more shocking in the seventies, although I suspect that the intention of the film was mainly to make BDSM more known to the general public, it is certainly not real (s)exploitation. The disadvantage is that the middle part focuses a lot of attention on the erotic scenes and that takes the momentum out of the film a bit.

A movie that disappointed me. I also regret taking it with me. Gérard Depardieu is a name like a clock in the (French) film world. Not that I have a high opinion of the man or his films, a big exception for Jean de Florette (Film, 1986), but I was nevertheless drawn to the figure of Depardieu.

Faint film actually about a woman who practices BDSM. Oliver is attracted to the woman and naturally falls into the world. No BDSM scenes with him, he's more of an observer. The relationship between the two characters lacks chemistry. No idea what attracts both to each other.

The film soon bleeds to death after a reasonably interesting start. I couldn't do much with this. Some scenes might have come across as shocking at the time, but today it is different, both on a cinematic and social level.
