Love's Masquerade plot

Russell Carrington takes the fall for a murder charge to protect Rita, the woman he loves, from being accused of killing her husband. He eludes the police and, in a fishing village, assumes the name Carr. He is about to marry Dorothy Wheeler, the village beauty, when detectives hired by Rita disrupt the ceremony and arrest him. Carrington refuses to defend himself and is sentenced to life imprisonment, but is released a year later thanks to the testimony of "Sly Sam," a burglar who witnessed Rita shoot her husband.
