"It's The Only Road Home"

When the Allies bomb Rome in the summer of 1943, the life of a mother and her daughter changes drastically. Cesira, a widow, decides to leave the city, and moves with her fifteen-year-old daughter to her hometown in the mountains. Once they arrive in the village, they meet Michele, a shy, introverted anti-fascist. He falls in love with Cesira, but it is Rosetta who has feelings for Michele. Assuming the war is over, mother and daughter later return to Rome on foot. During this retreat, the misery for mother and child really begins.
