Kingmaker plot
"A politician dreams of changing the world with an excellent campaign strategist behind."
Campaign strategist Seo Chang-dae dreams of changing the world and takes part in Kim Woon-bum's presidential campaign. To resist the current ruling party, Seo launches an aggressive propaganda campaign and Kim suddenly becomes the strongest candidate in the opposition. But a conflict between Seo and Kim over the morality of their tactics divides them, drastically jeopardizing the success of their campaign. At the same time, the ruling party secretly contacts Seo and makes him a very tempting offer.

The condition for judging this film is that you must be somewhat familiar with the political situation in South Korea in the 1960s and 1970s. I am not and I have experienced that as a handicap. The renowned cast delivers excellent acting, but the story about ambitions and scheming within and between political parties did not do much for me.

In 1961, Kim Woon-beom [Sol Kyung-gu] campaigns against the dictatorial regime. Although he has charisma and his integrity is commendable, Jeong-hyeon [Park Hyoung-soo] recognizes that integrity is not enough to change the regime. As a campaign strategist, he fights the Republicans in every way, especially by seeing through their sneaky games in time and using similar tricks to turn public opinion against the regime. But there are several hijackers on the coast, causing internal tensions and the Republicans are getting harder and harder. The language barrier and the many characters probably made it a bit more confusing for me than for the Korean speaking audience this movie is intended for. They will surely recognize the parallels with Korean history in this 'fictitious scenario' that is 'based on true events'. It is well made, but quite complicated.
