Boring, more boring, most boring. This film is a candidate for the category 'most boring film of all time'. Not only does nothing happen, but the images are also not beautiful or interesting in any way. Because the film cannot captivate in any way, I also cannot care what the film is about or what the director wanted to say with it. In any case, the film does not have 'boredom' as a theme (even though the film often lets us watch an uninteresting thing for minutes without anything happening or being said), so that the film is not deliberately boring in order to make the viewer think about boredom, perhaps as a basic theme of our postmodern existence, which could still be interesting: no, the film only shows an endless series of uninteresting scenes from the uninteresting lives of three uninteresting people. That makes the film completely boring.

I had some expectations of Hellhole. Unfortunately, I couldn't catch it at the last Film Festival in Ghent, but apparently I didn't miss too much. A rather long-winded, drawn-out film with many stylistic images and images that "hang" for a long time. A bit in the vein of Kid (2012) by Fien Troch. Supposedly meaningless images of 10 seconds could easily have been half as long. As if they were recordings from security cameras in some corner of a random street...

The point was made anyway. The shock after the attacks in Brussels is still felt in the film. The fear, the discomfort, the restlessness, the emptiness and the loneliness come to the fore. There are three separate characters who each have their own way of life to continue. There are not many dialogues. The film is told through the images. Atmospheric? Well, I'll leave it at that because I don't always think it's equally successful.

If film is an alternative to staring at walls, Devos is the wrong person. He doesn't hesitate to make you look at walls, sky or other meaningless things for a long time. Every now and then some people appear on screen to give the impression that there is some kind of story or connection between the characters. Forget it. It wouldn't hurt Devos if we forget this pretentious monstrosity in its entirety.
