Hamlet plot
This drama about a young Roma named Hamlet is based on William Shakespeare's famous play. In its form, however, it is reminiscent of the Yugoslav 'black wave' movement of the 1960s, with its realistic-poetic films about gypsies. The story is set in a garbage dump, the characters are Roma living in a colony near Belgrade. Two gangs, one Orthodox Christian and one Muslim, compete for control over the redistribution of the garbage. It is the Serbia of today. It's a harsh winter, Shakespeare's castles are no more than hovels, built in one night. When his brother dies, Jova marries his widow Yelena (Hamlet's mother) and becomes the leader of the gang that controls the landfill trade. The ghost of Hamlet's father haunts it, bent on revenge.
