Vienna 1832. A sinister killer keeps the Danube monarchy's suspense. A serial killer, masked in black, wearing hat and gloves, cruelly sends his victims to the afterlife. At the crime scene, he always leaves a pair of knitted socks. Everything starts with a swollen corpse in the water, which certainly won't be the only one. Commissioner Ledersteger and his assistant Czermak do the identification and end up in a web of intrigue. Their path leads to the highest circles and in the end the police are certain: not only is there a dangerous killer, but they must also uncover a conspiracy. Among the suspects are Napoleon's only son, Count Richemont, Countess Camerata, Countess Latour and Fanny Elßner. But just as they have an important lead, the killer strikes again.
